How to check if your Trezor has been tampered with

Trezor publishes its board designs as open hardware, so you can compare your board with the real one. All three checks apply.

  1. Official check
  2. Look inside
  3. Where it came from

Step 1

Official check

  1. Download Trezor Suite only from trezor.io.
  2. Safe 3, Safe 5, Safe 7: connect the device. Suite runs an authenticity check in which the secure element signs a random challenge with its factory certificate.
  3. Model One, Model T: check that the holographic seal is intact and that the device arrived without firmware. Every Trezor ships without firmware; if it’s already installed, don’t use the device.
  4. If any check fails, stop and contact Trezor Support.

What it shows

On Safe models, that the secure element holds Trezor’s factory certificate. (Trezor)

What it misses

Hardware added next to the genuine chips. Trezor says the check makes tampering “significantly harder”; it doesn’t claim to detect added hardware. Model One and Model T have no secure element at all.

Step 2

Look inside

Compare your board with the chips listed here, then upload photos for an automated check.

Before opening: Trezor cases are ultrasonically welded and won’t close cleanly again. A known counterfeit Model T had its main chip swapped and its case held shut with glue and double-sided tape, which is a warning sign in itself. Trezor’s board files and photos are published under open-hardware licences, so you can compare your board side by side.

Board check

Online
  1. Your device

Pick a brand to see its models.

  2. Photos of the opened board

Photograph the whole board with the chip markings in focus.

    • Usually 20 to 40 seconds. Photos are never stored.

    Step 3

    Where it came from

Buy from the Trezor Shop or a reseller listed on trezor.io. Trezor removed CryptoBilis from its reseller list on 12 October 2026 and is cutting back its reseller network.

A Trezor arrives with an intact hologram and no firmware installed. Never use a recovery phrase that came with the device.
